Block Siso Linear Equalizers for Turbo Equalization in Serial-tone Hf Modems

چکیده
This paper considers the application of iterative equalization and decoding, also known as Turbo equalization, to high frequency (HF) serial-tone modems. The softin soft-out (SISO) equalizer required for this approach is based on a linear filter, since a trellis-based equalizer’s computational complexity is too large for this application. Linear equalization algorithms with SISO capability are rederived, including a new approach based on a minimum-mean-sum-of-squared-errors (MMSSE) criterion. The problem of incorporating channel estimation errors into the equalization algorithms is also considered. Simulations are presented for a intersymbol interference channel with or without fading, whose characteristics are time-invariant within one frame of data. In absence of fading, Turbo equalization exhibits gains up to 3,5 dB compared to a conventional decision feedback equalizer where no iterations are performed.

Improved Receivers for Digital High Frequency Waveforms Using Turbo Equalization
We develop a Turbo equalization-based receiver for serial-tone HF waveforms, where the conventional decision feedback equalizer is replaced by a soft-in soft-out (SISO) equalizer, and the receiver iterates soft information between the equalizer and the decoder. To keep the computational burden of the iterative equalization and decoding procedure as low as possible, the SISO equalizer is designe...
متن کاملLow-complexity turbo equalization for time-varying channels
Low-complexity soft-in soft-out (SISO) equalizers based on time-varying linear filters and soft inter-symbol interference cancellation are known to be a viable alternative to the optimal trellis-based SISO equalizers when used in receivers based on iterative equalization and decoding. In particular, when the signal constellation is large and/or the channel impulse response is long, the computat...
متن کاملEnergy Efficient VLSI Architecture for Linear Turbo Equalizer
In this paper, energy efficient VLSI architectures for linear turbo equalization are studied. Linear turbo equalizers exhibit dramatic bit error rate (BER) improvement over conventional equalizers by enabling a form of joint equalization and decoding in which soft information is iteratively exchanged between the equalizer and decoder. However, turbo equalizers can be computationally complex and...
متن کاملPer-Tone Equalization for Single Carrier Block Transmission with Insufficient Cyclic Prefix
This paper proposes per-tone equalization methods for single carrier block transmission with cyclic prefix (SC-CP) systems. Minimum mean-square-error (MMSE) based optimum weights of the per-tone equalizers are derived for SISO (single-input single-output), SIMO (single-input multipleoutput), and MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) SC-CP systems. Unlike conventional frequency domain equalizati...
متن کاملComparative study of turbo equalization schemes using convolutional, convolutional turbo, and block-turbo codes
Turbo equalizers have been shown to be successful in mitigating the effects of inter-symbol interference introduced by partial response modems and by dispersive channels for code rates of 1 2. In this contribution, we comparatively studied the performance of a range of binary phase-shift keying turbo equalizers employing block-turbo codes, namely Bose–Chaudhuri–Hocquenghen turbo codes, convolut...
